WA AGILITY - DOG OF THE YEAR AWARDS - 2016
On Saturday evening the 17th of December the inaugural 2016 WA Agility Awards Night was conducted at the German Shepherd Dog Association of WA grounds. It was an event that saw a dedicated group of WA agility enthusiasts pull together under the guidance of the super efficient and hard working Gail Brindley, to create an evening at the end of the trialling year to celebrate those who had achieved highly in various areas of our much loved sport. A huge thank you to the GSDA for allowing us to utilize their club rooms and provide an extra hour free of charge.
With a very short turnaround time to collate results (the last qualifying trial was the 10th of December Doberman Club Trial) and a very limited time to organise a successful event, approximately 50 agility people came together to enjoy an amazing evening that included a lovely catered meal with some delicious food. It was an evening of much laughter and fun, raffles and short and enjoyable speeches. The best-decorated table Christmas tree was a huge hit with lots of creative minds working together to provide some truly inspirational Christmas tree designs. Thank you to Sarah Wickham for providing the idea, the crafts and the much needed chocolate at the end!
This evening came about following unsuccessful attempts by the Working Party to get support from DogsWest to recognise that the sport of agility has progressed to a more even playing field, and as such a Top Dog should be recognised in each of the five heights. Undoubtedly our past Top Dog recipients have been the best performing dogs in Agility in WA for that year but to ignore the fact that there are four other heights competing is to fail to recognise that a little dog should no longer have to compete against a big dog on any level. The Awards night’s main purpose was to remedy this and thanks to many generous sponsors and individual donations the Agility Working Party was able to present a number of awards during the evening.
